We are not merely in the universe—we are the universe, conscious of itself.
We often look to the stars for answers, forgetting that the same cosmic rhythm flows through us. The Universe is not something “out there”—it is within, around, and inseparable from who we are. In this piece, we explore how the Tao, the ancient way of harmony, mirrors the Universe itself. By understanding this symbolic unity, we begin to see our place not as observers, but as participants in the infinite dance of existence.
Professor Brian Cox, passionately proclaims that if we are truly the only species like us in our own galaxy, it elevates our existence to something profoundly SPECIAL!
But awe alone doesn’t tell the whole story. He reminds us, the emergence of life like ours—complex, conscious, and curious—might be astonishingly rare. The development of neighboring galaxies suggests that the conditions needed for such life are not just uncommon, but perhaps fleeting. It’s humbling to think that despite the universe’s vastness, we may be one of very few sparks of awareness. That doesn’t make us separate—it makes our connection to everything even more precious, and shouldn’t that give us pause?
With this knowledge we should be even more concerned about taking care of our planet. We can’t just pick up and go when our living conditions become unlivable. If life like ours is rare, then preserving it becomes not just a responsibility, but a cosmic imperative. Which brings us to the question:
What is Life?
LIFE is the shimmering depths of WATER—
the majestic OCEANS that cradle our existence.
LIFE embodies the richness of SOIL—
the intricate microcosm within the soil nurtures and sustains us all.
LIFE unfolds in the grandeur of TREES—
reaching for the warm embrace of our glorious SUN.
LIFE resonates in every breath we take—
in the rhythm of inhaling and exhaling.
LIFE stands tall like MOUNTAINS,
unyielding ROCKS, and all that captures the essence of stillness.
We are ALL composed of the same breathtaking mixture of chemicals and elements that exists throughout the vast expanse of the universe. The Universe is the essence of Life itself!
And from that cosmic truth, a sacred responsibility emerges…
And because we are special
That makes us the caretakers of our Earth and our universe.
There is no distance – no space between.
Our bodies contain all the dimensions and proportions of the universe.
All the dimensions are within, not outside of us.
Our sacred duty is right here on Earth, to grasp the essence of life and to fiercely protect it. And that can only happen when we know that we are not separate from it.
We Are All Connected
The Tao teaches us that ego sees us as separate from the ALL. It divides beauty from ugliness, good from bad—and then judges. But the Tao itself is not a thing—it is the flow, the rhythm, the unnameable source from which all things arise. In this way, the Tao and the Universe are one and the same: both are infinite, both are whole, both are beyond our grasp yet within our being.
Just as the Universe holds galaxies, stars, and the breath of life, the Tao holds opposites in harmony—light and dark, movement and stillness, form and formlessness. To live in alignment with the Tao is to live in harmony with the Universe. It is to release the illusion of separation and return to the truth of connection.
A bird or a bee does not have ego. It does not label or judge—it simply lives within the mandate of heaven, flowing with the Tao. And we, too, can learn to live this way: present, aware, and in tune with the infinite within.
Living in the moment throws open the doors and windows, letting in new and interesting perspectives—and I honor them. In doing so, I honor Life, the Universe, and the sacred connection we all share.
Live gently. Love deeply. Flow freely.
In JOY,
Cindy
